If not now, when?
Environmental issues, especially climate change, have risen up the public agenda in the last year and with the local elections on the horizon the experts predict the Green Party to make significant gains and double their share of national votes. Caroline Lucas urges Members to spread the word…

May’s elections to the Welsh Assembly, Scottish Parliament and to local councils up and down the country look set to go well for the Green Party, with experts predicting significant gains and the national vote share set to more than double.

Environmental issues, especially climate change, have risen up the public agenda in the last year, with one of the warmest winters on record, the Stern Report and the findings of the more than 2,000 scientists on the UN’s International Panel on Climate Change all point towards the likely huge humanitarian and economic costs of failing to take radical action now.

More electors than ever say they will vote for the party with the best policies designed to cut UK – and global - CO2 emissions. For an increasing number of them that means voting for the Green Party on May 3rd.

And it isn’t just environmental issues which are driving this green renaissance: people are impressed by our social policies too and are recognising that environmental and social justice are inextricably linked in the notion of sustainability, the principle that lies at the heart of all Green Party policies. But we mustn’t be complacent. If we are able to capitalise on this surge in support it will be thanks to the hours of hard work targeting winnable votes, producing and distributing literature, and canvassing that will enable Green Party candidates to make the breakthrough and, if you haven’t been already, now’s the perfect (and crucial!) time to get involved.

The last few weeks and days before any election is always the most important, and I hope many of you will find time to help with your local parties’ campaigns. If you haven’t got a local party, or it’s not contesting an election this May, help another nearby!

As they say, if not now, when?
