The only way is up
The Green Party is on the up, our poll ratings are rising and this year’s elections will see us make gains. The post of Male Principal Speaker has been keeping me busy, and yes, the BBC at least are listening.* Our growth, however, is fuelled by THE increasing severity of environmental problems, particularly the greenhouse effect.

The Green vision is vital: only we have the courage to say that a society that makes money its god cannot protect the poorest or maintain the planet. We cannot sustain infinite growth on a finite planet and must use less energy - yet the government is putting up rail fares and closing local post offices and hospitals. The Conservatives talk green but moan about everything from the congestion charge to the benefits of recycling. The LibDems also support Trident and are increasingly business friendly.

Green politics means looking at everything differently. We have to break oil addiction, respect animals, localise the economy, fight poverty and replace the corporations with mutually owned institutions. None of this is easy and it cannot wait for decades, we have to start now. This means spreading green ideas and rethinking our culture from worm bins to zero waste.

It means getting Greens elected. It means using direct action to stop Heathrow expansion or joining trade unions to encourage green production. This is big politics, it’s far more than the big brother game of leaders and a push button electorate. We all need to get involved, think deeply about green ideas, recruit members and do more.

Green politics are the politics of survival, we have to raise the game if our kids are to have a future. As they say, it’s over to you.
