Trafford Greens have been at the forefront of a campaign against a proposed 140,000 square foot ‘Mega Tesco’ in Gorse Hill, Stretford. The massive development - the size of two Taj Mahals - threatens to wipe out local shops, and swamp residents with daily traffic gridlock.

National planning guidelines say our existing high streets should be protected and promoted, yet 50 small shops and businesses close every week. Tesco say they will bring 600 jobs to Gorse Hill, but not how many of these will be part time, minimum wage and insecurely contracted, nor how many jobs will be lost in the surrounding area.

The land Tesco want to build on belongs to a local school, but Trafford Council plan to close the school and reclaim the land, before selling it off to Tesco. The council will use this (public) money to redevelop Lancashire County Cricket Ground.

The NoMegaTesco campaign is in its infancy, but within a week the controversy surrounding the development had gleaned two front pages in the local press. Local people quickly came forward to organise research, petitions, leaflets, information stalls and a letter writing campaign.

Trafford Greens' Parliamentary candidate Margaret Westbrook has been chairing the meetings and we have been working very effectively with a group called "Keep Chorlton Interesting". There will be regular updates on the campaign on our website and blog.
