Greens in the region
The region has strong council representation with groups in Bradford, Kirklees, Leeds, Scarborough, Sheffield and York. The successful Warm Zone scheme to insulate houses in Kirklees, proposed by the Green council group, is a model that numerous councils and the Scottish Parliament are looking to use to launch their own schemes.

Campaign Objectives
We need to increase our vote significantly to elect an MEP. Martin aims to fight a winning campaign and we are focusing on offering a positive alternative to the major parties, all of whom supported the economic system that has failed us all.

Lead Candidate : Dr Martin Hemingway
Martin served 12 years on Leeds City Council where he was actively involved in launching the Leeds recycling scheme. He also introduced a green purchasing policy and energy saving programmes as chair of purchasing and energy. He is a former national Chair of Nuclear Free Local Authorities. Key issues for Martin are energy, food supply, justice and peace.

Second candidate : Shan Oakes
Shan is director of a trust working locally and nationally to promote education for a just and sustainable world. She fought a dynamic campaign in finishing second to David Davis in the Haltemprice & Howden by-election in 2008. Shan’s experience includes working with voluntary groups and aid agencies in Uganda. Her political priority is building healthy communities for a green and peaceful world.

Platform on which our candidates are standing
The focus will be transforming the regional economy from dirty coal and coal fired power to clean renewable energy, creating green collar jobs in a sustainable economy. We will campaign against expansion plans for the Leeds-Bradford and Doncaster Sheffield Robin Hood airports and for improved public transport in the region.
