We have local authority and parish councillors across the region in Leicester, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Nottinghamshire.
Campaign Objectives
We see the European elections as an opportunity to raise the profile of the party across the East Midlands and promote the establishment and growth of local parties and improve performance in the county council elections.
In 2004 the region returned two UKIP MEPs, two Conservative, plus one Labour and one Liberal Democrat. UKIP may not fare so well this time having lost former tv celebrity Robert Kilroy-Silk, their high profile candidate in this region last time around.
Lead Candidate: Sue Mallender
Sue is a longstanding member of the party and lives in West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire with her husband Richard and her younger daughter Alice. Her older daughter, Lizzie is in her final year at university.
Formerly a primary school teacher, Sue now works for Nottingham City Council as a Play Development Officer, supporting voluntary groups of adults and children in disadvantaged communities.
In 2007 Sue was re-elected to a second term as councillor for Lady Bay ward on Rushcliffe Borough Council, on which she is now leader of the Green Group, and is also a candidate in the County Council elections.
Our lead candidate for the East Midlands, Sue has stood for the European Parliament at every election since 1989, when she was one of those who travelled to Strasbourg to “Claim her seat”, having secured enough votes to win a seat if there had been a proportional voting system in place at that time. This time we hope to win and take that seat.
Number Two: Richard Mallender
Richard, who was Chair of the Green Party Executive from 2005 to 2008, is our number two candidate for the East Midlands. He lives in West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire, with his wife Sue and step-daughter Alice.
In 2007 Richard was elected as councillor for Lady Bay ward on Rushcliffe Borough Council. Before then he served as an elected member of Brighton & Hove City Council. He is also chair of Nottingham Green Party.
Richard is parliamentary candidate for Rushcliffe and is also standing for election to Nottinghamshire County Council. Having worked for the Red Cross and in IT, he now works in administration for Nottingham City Council.
Platform on which our candidates will be standing:
A keen community activist, Sue is a driving force in many local groups, promoting the development of new nature reserves and supporting local farmers’ markets. In cooperation with community groups and local businesses Richard is working to promote 20mph zones, encourage cycling and aid moves toward a locally based lower carbon economy.
